What makes a logo good or bad?

Logos will always be subjective to the viewer, so whether you think a logo is a good or not is what will be agreed upon with the masses. BUT, there are some rules to logo design, that have nothing to do with if it looks good, but rather, does it do it’s job?

 

I also want to preface that I am not here to bash another designer’s hard work, this is purely for education & meant to empower you to be able to have a better eye for graphic design.

Things that make all logos should be:

  1. Memorable
  2. Timeless
  3. Versatile
  4. Practical 
  5. Appropriate

 

So let’s dig into each of these and learn more about what these mean.

 

01/ Memorable

As obvious as it sounds, it’s commonly overlooked. Due to DIYing your logo, hiring a designer that doesn’t specialize in Branding, or just not instilling a deeper concept to your logo,  usually means it doesn’t pack a punch. Take a second and think about the first few logos that come to mind, and think about why you remember them. Was it the form, color, typography, or graphic? 

 

02/ Timeless

Trends… TikTok & IG love them, but I HATE THEM. I can’t lie and say I have never fallen victim to following a trend. But when it comes to designing logos, I avoid them like the ‘rona.. The last thing you want is to pay someone thousands of dollars just for your logo to feel outdated in 2 years. Not to mention,  that if you’re designing around trends, then you’re molding your business to fit that trend, instead of celebrating your differences.

 

03/ Versatile

I can’t BELIEVE how many logos I see each and every day that lack functionality. Logos can be placed just about anywhere, so they need to work across many different types of media and applications . So, it is important that they are legible, recognizable, and clear, not matter the size, orientation, color variations, or layout.

 

04/ Practical

We are all creative beings, but as nicely as I can say it, sometimes we need people to stay in their (creative) lane. Clients can come to me with elaborate ideas for their logo, but what they end up describing to me is an illustration. Your logo can have details that communicate the things you want it to, without having to paint the ENTIRE picture. (The ah-ha moment makes out to be a more memorable logo anyways!)

 

05/ Appropriate

Before creating any logo, I take a deep look into the industry, my client’s direct competitors, and figure out what to do, and not to do. You see, you want your logo to feel right when it comes to your industry. But in the same breath, you want to stand-out in your industry. It can seem like a catch22, right? Here’s the thing, if you’re sellings one thing, and your logo looks and feels like you’re selling something else, then chances are, they won’t trust you due to confusion or lack of awareness.
